Radiosurgery is a non-invasive procedure that allows doctors to remove benign and even malignant tumors. Radiosurgery can been used for the treatment of a wide variety of conditions, ranging from treating lung cancer and brain tumors, to something as simple as mole removal.
Due to its precise nature, Radiosurgery has been especially beneficial for the treatment of brain tumors. Small slow growing tumors are the best candidates for Radiotherapy. Large fast growing tumors or an extremely large number of tumors will need to be treated with other methods. This and other forms of Stereotactic Radiosurgery have much less of an impact on the quality of life of the patient, but they also take time. To successfully complete a cycle could take between thirty to ninety days. Also many insurance companies won’t cover the housing needed for the Radiotherapy.
As RadioSurgery progresses it has been approved for use for liver tumors, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and head and neck tumors. For use with prostate cancer Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) accelerates protons with an energy of 200MeV or greater. A mold of the patient’s prostate is used to guide the machine to deliver these high energy protons exactly where needed. With such precise delivery the patient will have a lower incidence of side effects over time along with a faster recovery. Many patients are cancer free and side effect free in less that six months. Also since Proton Beam Therapy leaves the prostate it also leaves functionality.
